Single-source lore notes for the Wells, their rules, locations, status, and unresolved questions.

Wells of Magic

The Wells of Magic are ancient, sentient or semi-sentient sources of primordial and elemental power. They are not merely reservoirs of magic; they appear tied to the balance of the world, the Cataclysm cycle, and the consequences of mortals or outsiders attempting to control forces that exceed ordinary magic.

Confirmed lore so far:

  • There are six Wells of Magic.
  • Wells are bound to tell the truth.
  • The Wand of Wells is the only known method to close or control a Well.
  • The Wand of Wells was last known to be held by Jennifer Wilbreta and is currently missing.
  • A Cataclysm can be delayed, but may not be fully stoppable.
  • The Wells are connected to elemental and primordial forces, including Order, Chaos, and Arcana.

Known Wells:

  • Khorag: Located beneath the World Tree in Thataways. Stable when encountered. Connected to nature and divine natural power.
  • Ordor: Located in Paramon. Disturbed after Salazar used the Wand of Wells with lightning.
  • Saiffi: Located in Balrog. Truth-bound, wise, and currently with the party in a waterskin.
  • Open Hand: Believed to be at or near the Gale Monastery.
  • Nebain: In the sunken city of Catur.
  • Hanedal: Believed to be on Hanedal Island.

Open questions:

  • Where exactly is the Wand of Wells now?
  • What conditions cause a Well to become disturbed, active, depleted, or portable?
  • What does each Well want, fear, or protect?
  • What items or truths might persuade Wells that distrust the party?
  • What does it mean that the party carries Saiffi?
