The Contract of Baron Wells

A warning tale about a noble whose pact and ambition unleashed forces beyond control.

Back to Songbook
The Contract of Baron Wells
[Verse 1]
Bentrios, a city of spires, once gleamed with golden light
Now shadowed by despair, consumed by endless night
Baron Wells, its mayor bold, a name whispered in shame
His coffers lined with silver, built on a burning flame

[Verse 2]
The markets stalled, the factories fell, the people cried in need
His promises were hollow, planted like a bitter seed
The city choked on debt and lies, a future bleak and grim
In his despair, he sought a cure, a path both dark and dim

[Verse 3]
He journeyed to the crumbling tower, where shadows danced and spun
To summon Salazar, the demon lord, the thunder's fearsome son
His voice a crackling whisper, a bargain he implored
'Restore my city, Salazar, and be justly rewarded.'

[Verse 4]
Salazar’s eyes, like burning coals, surveyed the Baron's plight
'I'll mend your broken city, Wells, and set its future right
But know the cost is steep and vast, a price you must embrace
For ancient artifacts of power, I demand their rightful place.'

[Verse 5]
The Baron pledged his word, a contract sealed in blood
To deliver wonders lost to time, misunderstood
He craved the city's glory back, he craved the people's praise
He'd damn his soul a thousand times, to escape these hazy days.

[Verse 6]
He sought the Axe of Urgan, a weapon forged in fire
A relic of a bygone age, fueled by forgotten ire
He stole it from the ancient crypt, where guardians lay asleep
And offered it to Salazar, a promise he would keep.

[Verse 7]
Salazar laughed, a thunderclap that shook the very ground
'The bargain's struck, Baron Wells, your city shall be crowned!'
With a flick of wrist and flash of light, a change began to brew
Bentrios began to unwind, a world both old and new.

[Verse 8]
But not the splendor Wells had dreamed, not the golden age he sought
The city spiraled backward, to a time before all thought
Before the towers pierced the clouds, before the engines roared
To a simpler life, untamed and wild, a future unexplored

[Verse 9]
The people screamed in terror, as progress turned to dust
Their modern lives, erased and gone, betrayed by broken trust
The Baron watched in horror, his ambition turned to pain
He'd traded progress for a dream, and brought the city rain.

[Verse 10]
Bentrios was no longer grand, just shacks upon the plain
The consequence of greed and pride, a lesson learned in vain
So heed this tale, ye who may stray, and seek a power unknown
Don't make a deal with a demon lord, you'll reap what you have sown.

[Outro]
The Contract of Baron Wells, a cautionary sound
A ballad of deceit and fear, on hallowed, cursed ground
Remember Bentrios, lost in time, a warning in the air
Don't bargain with the darkness, embrace the light with care.
