The Keeper of the Quiet Key

A solemn meditation on the burden of guarding dangerous truths and the lonely responsibility of those who choose silence for the sake of others.

The Keeper of the Quiet Key
[Verse I]
There once was a door beneath root and stone,
No hinge nor handle shown,
Behind it slept a thousand names
The world had never known.
The wise walked past, the bold turned back,
The gods would not agree—
For none would choose what truth should cost,
Or who its price would be.
[Verse II]
A singer came with empty hands,
No crown, no sacred claim,
He saw the lock, he felt the weight,
He learned the door’s true name.
“For if this key is lifted high,
Then all must bear the load—
I’ll take the blame, I’ll walk alone
Upon that silent road.”
[Chorus]
Oh hush now, hush, let the stories lie,
Let memory breathe, let truth not cry,
For some doors guard us by staying closed,
And some are kept by the one who chose.
[Verse III]
The key was forged of whispered years,
Of prayers half-overheard,
It did not cut, it did not kill—
It simply rewrote words.
With gentle turns and careful hands
It softened sharpest pain,
But every mercy left a scar
That never was the same.

[Verse IV]
Companions asked, “What do you bear?
Why flinch when oaths are sworn?”
He smiled and sang of weathered roads
And laughter tattered, worn.
“For if I name what sleeps with me,
Then choice becomes your chain—
And I would rather be mistrusted
Than teach you how to maim.”
[Chorus]
Oh hush now, hush, let the stories lie,
Let memory breathe, let truth not cry,
For some doors guard us by staying closed,
And some are kept by the one who chose.
[Verse V]
The gods look on with silent eyes,
They do not bless nor blame,
For knowledge kept is still a truth
That knowledge shared can maim.
And so he sings of other things,
Of battles lost and won—
While every night he counts the cost
Of being the only one.
[Final Verse]
If ever comes the darkest hour
When all must surely fall,
He’ll lift the key with shaking hands
And answer mercy’s call.
But until then, let silence stand,
Let rumors circle wide—
For better one soul bend beneath the truth
Than watch the whole world decide.
[Final Chorus (soft)]
So hush now, hush, let the stories lie,
Let memory breathe, let truth pass by,
For some doors guard us by staying closed,
And some are kept by the one who chose.
