The Battle
I react to the being and yell as I charge “Every Battle has a chorus, and I shall lead it” throwing a dagger deep into the creature. I play an inspiring song for Roon. Gildas casts Grease underneath the creature and the creature slips in the slick fluid. Roon beats on the creature and spells are cast by Makani and GIldas. Roon and I both get hit by the creature. I am nearly mortally wounded. Corvinas hits hard in retaliation with assistance from Gildas’ familiar owl. Roon also attacks and hits the entity hard. I also strike it again, attempting to disarm it but fail. I realize in horror that this creature is regenerating itself after every blow. As the creature stands and deals more damage to itself, bringing me to the brink of death, Gildas casts a cruel laughing spell and the entity falls again. All the while, Bridgit would attack the creature from the shadows of Roon’s back and then disappear as quickly. Corvinas calls on the very name of Mihira and a holy energy engulfs his weapon as he smites a mighty blow on the creature. With a final sneak attack, Bridgit strikes the fatal blow to the creature.
Aftermath
The road is ruined by the creature manifesting itself from the material components of the street. As we begin to pick through the ruins of the creature, a nobleman emerges from a nearby building demanding answers and being somewhat of a prig. I encourage him to go back to the hidey hole and leave the investigation to the big people.
Gildas’ Discovery
Gildas does the ritual of detecting magic to figure out where the magic source exists and the nature of the magic used to manifest this entity. He discovers that there is something emitting from the center of the rubble pile. When Gildas relays this information to the team, I dive in to find this magic object. I carefully separate the dross from the magic and uncover a round red orb that is now glowing orange. I hand this strange glowing object to Gildas for his expertise. Gildas discovers that someone has planted this magic here and he feels that this orb was created from magic long lost to house specific types of magic. The magic belongs to the class of evocation magic.
Gildas also sensed strong magic from my satchel. I get defensive when the party begins to ask about what I am carrying. I remind them that “we all have our crosses to bear” and “it is my burden to bear”. Gildas knows the nature of magic surrounding the leather satchel is both protection magic and concealing magic.
The Gazing of the Orb
The team asks the owners of the nearby building for a place where they can further investigate the magic without being outside and exposed. They offer a basement room that is sturdy built. In this room Gildas gazes at the orb to try to see its inner workings. His vision turns to a fiery realm that he can only believe is the Nine Hells. Within this fiery realm he sees a large demon rise. It is the Demon Lord of Rage and his very eyes are on fire. An overwhelming sense of rage rises and Gildas barely has time to break the connection. The haste and psychic jolt of disconnection causes Gildas to drop the orb. It cracks which causes the rage to be released.
Acting quickly I call on the owners of the building for a wizard or someone who can administer mend spells. The orb is mended, but not before releasing 10% of its contents.
Seeking the Mayor
A decision is made to seek out mayor Barron Wells in the Bentrios Tower to tell him what has occurred. We know his penthouse rests on top of the tower. As we make our way to the tower, a tempest begins to form outside. Makani knows that this is no ordinary storm and urges us to seek shelter. As we run to the tower we notice it is tilted at an angle, as if knocked from its foundation and set upon by a great weight. Makani further realizes that the storm is being caused by the demon lord of lightning and that this demon lord is bringing the storm down on the city.
We rush up the stairs to the mayor’s door to find it ajar. Listening in, we hear the growling of infernal speech. Corvinus understands the speech and translates. The mayor is heard saying in infernal “I did all that I can”. A second voice is heard speaking infernal which turns out to be a demon lord standing next to him. “You have not done enough! You have five days to get what I need!” The group hears the unsheathing of a sword.
Encountering the Mayor
Roon needs no other prompting and he charges into the room only to be confronted by the demon lord who looks at him and states “Foolish Mortal!” and he promptly disappears in a flash. We feel the shifting of the ground beneath us as the tower rights itself. We quickly interrogate the mayor about what he is seeking and how we can help and how we can ensure that the demon lord will not take over the city.
The mayor relays information about the demons collecting items from far and wide around the Gale and are seeking the last of the items in Urgan the Great’s lost great axe. It is rumored to be infused with Urgan’s rage energy and is also known as the “Blood Rage Great Axe of Urgan”. I think through my catalog of ballads about Urgan and his lost axe and come across one ancient ballad that speaks of Urgan’s bride – Jennifer Wilbreta – who resides in the northern mountain ranges venturing south and burying the axe somewhere in the central plains of the continent. We know that Jennifer is a palit elf of the Fey. Pressing the mayor further with this information, we find he is silenced by his vows but does mention that the axe is definitely underground somewhere. He also mentions an area that is unexplored in a forest that is teeming with Fey Wild magic and goes as far as to pull out a map of the continent and show us where this woods resides. We know that our future and fate lie in that forest.
